High-flying Shrimps pile misery on Cobblers

First-half goals from Phil Jevons and Laurence Wilson secured a fourth straight victory for high-flying Morecambe as they triumphed 2-0 at Northampton.

In stark contrast, it was Northampton's fourth successive defeat in all competitions and third in the space of a week at Sixfields.

Morecambe were good value for their triumph but Northampton contributed to their own downfall by gifting the visitors both their goals.

Jevons opened the scoring in the 15th minute, volleying home after Gary McDonald took advantage of an error by Byron Webster before crossing into the penalty area.

Morecambe doubled their advantage in the 24th minute when a quick break and cross from Izak Reid saw Paul Turnbull needlessly handle in the box and Wilson despatched the ensuing spot-kick.

Reid should have extend Morecambe's lead two minutes before the break from another quick breakaway but, after bursting into the area, he was denied by Sam Walker.

Substitute Michael Jacobs almost reduced the arrears three minutes after the restart after racing clear but was firstly denied by keeper Barry Roche and then found his rebound blocked by Stewart Drummond.

John Johnson then should have scored four minutes later when he somehow headed over from a Jacobs free-kick.

But those two chances apart, Cobblers offered little and Morecambe could have added to their tally with McDonald blasting wide and Kevin Ellison thwarted by Walker in stoppage time.
