Morecambe striker Jon Newby won praise from boss Sammy McIlroy after his hat-trick in the 5-1 thrashing of Rotherham United.

The much-travelled 29-year-old has now scored four times in his last two games, having only netted six times up to that point.

McIlroy said: "Jon has been on the fringe of the first team all season, but always done well when he has been called upon.

"He deserved a run in the team and he is showing us all what he is capable of now.

"He never seems to panic and in a one-against-one situation you would always back him. He has scored four in two games now and I am delighted for him."
