Newby handed Shrimps deal

Morecambe have handed a one-year contract to former Bury and Wrexham striker Jon Newby.

The 28-year-old finished last season with non-league Southport, but has impressed during the Shrimps' build-up to their first season in the Football League.

Newby started his career as a trainee with Liverpool, being loaned out to Crewe Alexandra and Sheffield United before joining Bury on a permanent basis in March 2001.

He linked up with Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2003 and has also had spells with York City, Kidderminster Harriers and Wrexham.

In total, Newby has scored 30 goals in 249 senior appearances.
