Hatters hurt Shrimps at Globe Arena

Luton made it four wins from five games with a battling 3-1 victory at the Globe Arena.

After an even start Luton, who lost both games against the Shrimps last season, took the lead in the 13th minute.

Paddy McCourt, the game's best player, swung in a corner and Luke Wilkinson made the most of some woeful Morecambe marking to head past Barry Roche from eight yards out.

The home side hit back with Paul Mullin firing wide from the edge of the box before levelling the scores on 24 minutes.

Lee Molyneux and Aaron Wildig linked up well down the left before the latter drilled in a low cross to the far post for Tom Barkhuizen to score from close range.

The Hatters regained the lead just two minutes later. McCourt was the inspiration with a low shot from 20 yards out that was only parried by Barry Roche into the path of Cameron McGeehan, who slotted home the rebound from the edge of the six-yard box.

Craig Mackail-Smith had a golden chance of a third for Luton on 48 minutes but ballooned an effort well over the bar from 10 yards out when teed up perfectly by Josh McQuoid.

The home side then dominated for a long spell, with Luton keeper Mark Tyler forced into a superb double save just after the hour with a fine block from Molyneux's swirling shot and a follow up save from Wildig who looked to slot home Andy Fleming's dangerous low cross.

The Shrimps thought they had levelled 12 minutes from time when substitute Kevin Ellison volleyed the ball past Tyler at the far post, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

To make matters worse for the home side, former Shrimps player Jonathan Smith made the most of a stroke of good fortune to make it 3-1 to Luton in the 89th minute with a tap-in after his first effort was blocked by Roche.
