Shrimps stay top

Kevin Ellison's fourth goal of the season gave Morecambe a third successive win as they defeated Oxford 1-0 to keep them top of Sky Bet League Two.

The 35-year-old once again grabbed the headlines with the only goal of the game five minutes from half-time to keep the U's pointless.

Jack Redshaw claimed the assist when his shot from the edge of the area was well saved by George Long but the ball fell perfectly for Ellison, who headed into the empty goal from close range.

The goal came after a period of intense Oxford pressure. Danny Hylton saw a close-range header superbly tipped over by Barry Roche and, moments later, the same player had a header from Danny Rose's corner cleared off the line by Andy Fleming.

On-loan U's full-back Joe Riley tested Roche with a long-range shot and Junior Brown also went close as Oxford looked to turn their possession into goals.

The second half swung from end to end with both sides coming close to scoring but the biggest talking point came in the 79th minute. Morecambe keeper Roche looked to have brought down Hylton in the box but with everyone expecting a penalty and a red card, the Oxford man was instead booked for a dive to add to the visitors' frustrations.
