McIlroy relief at spot-kick break

Published: 30 Aug 2009 - 17:01:14

McIlroy's team had given away three spot-kicks in their previous four matches but referee David Webb pointed to the spot when a low cross struck Spireites centre-half Ian Breckin on the arm. "To concede three penalties in four games before this one was a bit of a sickener," said McIlroy. "Some people will say should we have got the penalty, some will give it some won't, the boy did handle it but whether it's intentional or not it's for the referee to decide. But he's given us that little bit of a break." McIlroy felt it was what his players deserved for a spirited display against a team that had won their previous two home games. He added: "We did very well and I think that if we play like this we will soon get out of the position that we are in. It's always difficult to come to Chesterfield but I thought for the first 20 minutes we were excellent and created a couple of chances. "I was pleased with the response once they had scored through Jack Lester and we had a little bit of luck for a change to get that penalty but the lads deserved something for their efforts."
