Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy was ecstatic after his side marked their Carling Cup debut with a stunning 2-1 victory at Preston North End.

Goals from Jim Bentley and David Artell gave the Shrimps a famous victory at Deepdale, as they shocked their Championship local rivals.

McIlroy said: "It's another proud moment for Morecambe, it's fantastic. To a man they were absolutely brilliant.

"But to be honest and I'm not taking the Mickey, I'd rather have three points on Saturday.

"We're not going to win the League Cup, but to come here, to a fantastic stadium, against a good side and to come out on top, it's another great part in Morecambe's history.

"There was no fear, we just stood up to them."
