McIlroy berates wasteful Shrimps

Published: 14 Mar 2010 - 14:40:00

The Shrimps took the lead four minutes before the break when Paul Mullin headed home new loan signing Simon Hackney's cross, however, Grimsby hit back with Michael Coulson scoring his second of the season after a swift break in the 59th minute. McIlroy said: "We were brilliant in the first half and the game should have been dead and buried. But we didn't take our chances again and that is why we are not in a play-off spot this season. "We dominate a lot of games like this but don't win them because we don't score anywhere near like the goals we should. "When you miss chances like we did it always gives the other team a bit of heart and that is what happened in this game. We couldn't maintain the pace and Grimsby came back into it and we gave them a sloppy second. "We are not too far away but that lack of a killer instinct is hitting us hard and we need to finish teams off when we have the chance."
