Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy hailed his side after they claimed a welcome win over high-flying Port Vale and urged his players to take the result into the hectic festive period. Vale`s first defeat in any competition since the start of October came courtesy of Keiran Charnock`s simple finish, ending a run of two successive home defeats for the Shrimps. McIlroy said: "It was a much-needed win and I am proud of the lads for their effort and commitment. "We have been saying for a long time we are in a false position and we have been playing some good stuff without getting the rewards we deserved. "Our football has been good all season but we always knew we needed to do better when we didn't have the ball and that is what we did here. "The lads showed great passion and there were some fantastic individual performances against a very good side. We now have to kick on over the busy Christmas period and make sure this isn't a one-off win."
