McIlroy praises Shrimps character

Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy is convinced his lowly side are heading in the right direction ahead of this weekend's trip to Southend. The Shrimps are rock-bottom of npower League Two but McIlroy saw plenty of encouraging signs in last weekend's 1-1 draw with Chesterfield and a vast improvement from the 4-0 defeat at Oxford. McIlroy said: "Against a very good Chesterfield team, we played some great stuff in the first half and then did everything we could not to concede when they had a good spell in the second. "Players were putting their bodies on the line and throwing themselves in front of everything and that is the character we need to show."
