Seventh-second heaven for Macclesfield

League leaders Morecambe were given a rude awakening when Macclesfield scored the fastest ever goal at the Moss Rose.

Going into the game leading League Two on goal difference, the Shrimps were shell-shocked on seven seconds when live-wire striker Ben Tomlinson scored straight from the kick-off.

Tomlinson darted past three static defenders before sliding a low right-footed shot into the far corner from 25 yards.

But their lead was short lived, as Shaun Brisley was adjudged to have pushed Danny Carlton inches outside the box - allowing Lawrence Wilson to whip in a free-kick which ricocheted around the six-yard line before Carlton poked home from close range.

Brisley might have made amends on 35 minutes but planted a header over the bar from six yards.

Former Macc defender Isaac Reid went close for his new side on 33 minutes but Jose Veiga made a good save.

Morecambe could have taken all three points on 83 minutes but Carlton headed wide from six yards with the goal gaping.

At the death, Tomlinson neatly rounded his marker but could only pick out keeper Barry Roche from the edge of the box.
