Morecambe still flying high

Morecambe maintained their position at the top of League Two with a battling 2-1 victory at Dagenham.

After a first half of few chances, Morecambe took the lead three minutes into the second period through the in-form Danny Carlton.

Kevin Ellison played a long ball that beat the Dagenham defence and Carlton was there to run clear of Mark Arber and produce a neat right-footed finish to beat Chris Lewington.

Jim Bentley's side doubled their advantage on 54 minutes after another swift attack. Lewington punched a Laurence Wilson cross clear but the ball fell perfectly for Stewart Drummond, who produced a cool finish to put the ball into the empty net from 12 yards out.

Lewington then produced fine saves from Carlton and Lewis Alessandra before the home side came back into the game with a goal from Oliver Lee 17 minutes from time.

Lee swung in a free-kick from the edge of the area that floated over Barry Roche and into the top left hand corner of the Morecambe goal.

Dagenham then had a Brian Woodall effort cleared off the line by Ellison as they battled to the end.
