Brewers up and running with win

Published: 15 Aug 2009 - 19:31:36

Burton had the ideal start with Greg Pearson heading them in front after three minutes, Guy Branston and Shaun Harrad first getting heads to John McGrath's first corner of the game. The Brewers looked in control when Russell Penn volleyed in Jimmy Phillips' cross from the left from eight yards after 16 minutes but Morecambe, always dangerous going forward, pulled one back within a minute, Ian Craney netting a delightfully-placed shot from the edge of the box past the left hand of debutant keeper Artur Krysiak. It was 3-1 to the Brewers after 38 minutes when Morecambe failed to clear their lines in an urgent Burton attack and Harrad made room for himself before tucking a low shot inside Roche's right-hand post from 18 yards. But it was 4-1 eight minutes after half-time when Pearson was tripped by Danny Adams near the right by-line and smashed the penalty to Barry Roche's left. Back came Morecambe again, with Phil Jevons giving Krysiak no chance with a cracking shot from 20 yards after 62 minutes. But McGrath exposed some casual Morecambe defending when he chased a loose ball into the box and poked it past Roche after 75 minutes for 5-2 and Morecambe's misery was compounded when Mark Duffy was sent off two minutes from time for a late, high lunge on Paul Boertien.
