Morecambe striker Matty Blinkhorn will miss the start of the season after being told he needs to have a hernia operation.
The 22-year-old had to have a scan earlier this week after suffering the injury in the pre-season clash against Tranmere Rovers.
He is likely to be sidelined until the end of August, with Shrimps boss Sammy McIlroy telling the Lancaster & Morecambe Citizen: "It's a real blow for Matty and for us.
"He showed in the first 20 minutes of the game against Tranmere how sharp he can be, but then he began to feel the injury again.
"Although it's disappointing, it's better to get the injury sorted out now and make sure he's ready for the long season ahead.''
