Benyon brace sinks Shrimps

Torquay top scorer Elliot Benyon's double sandwiched a super strike from on-loan QPR winger Romone Rose as Torquay ended a nine-match wait for a League Two win by beating nine-man Morecambe 3-1. Benyon fired the Gulls into an 11th-minute lead after Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche saved the striker's spot-kick but failed to hold on to the ball. Benyon won the penalty after being tumbled on his way into the penalty area by Morecambe central defender Andy Parrish, who was red carded by referee Phil Gibbs following consultation with his assistant. Morecambe responded from a Craig Stanley corner when central defender Chris McCready crashed the ball home on the volley in the 30th minute. Rose then let fly with a thumping right-foot drive from 20 yards to make it 2-1 before Benyon tapped in from a few yards in the 75th minute after being teed up by strike partner Chris Zebroski. Scott Bevan made a brilliant one-handed stop to deny winger Mark Duffy in the 57th minute. Substitute Eunan O'Kane announced his timely arrival by smashing a seemingly effortless volley off the upright from 20 yards on the hour. Morecambe were reduced to nine men when Chris Shuker was sent off in the 82nd minute.
