Rangers held in stalemate
Berwick missed a chance to leapfrog Montrose as they failed to break down their 10-man hosts in a goalless draw.
The Borderers came into this clash having won two of their last three matches and they created plenty of chances throughout.
They came agonisingly close early on when John Fairbairn met Lee Currie's corner only to see his header hit the post before being cleared off the line.
And their chances of victory were boosted when Paul Watson saw red for a second bookable offence in the 68th minute.
Montrose did have opportunities of their own to break the deadlock and only a goalline clearance from Ross Gray kept the sides level.
But Berwick knew it was not their day when, four minutes before the final whistle, Fairbairn's header was hacked to safety when he looked certain to nod home the winner.
