Monaco release Ricardo Carvalho

Euro 2016 winner Ricardo Carvalho will not be offered a new deal at Monaco.

The 38-year-old helped Portugal end their wait for international silverware this summer but has been told by the Ligue 1 club that he is surplus to their requirements.

A statement on the club's website read: "Out of contract since June 30, Ricardo Carvalho will not continue this season in the Monaco shirt."

Vice-president Vadim Vasilyev added : "When he arrived, people doubted his ability to get back to the top level.

"Ricardo has justified the confidence of AS Monaco by showing a little more, the great professional he is, and contributing to the sporting results of the team.

"It is an honour to have had this great champion among us, Ricardo will always be welcome in Monaco."

The release ends a three-year stay at the club for the former Chelsea and Real Madrid centre-back as Monaco have already signed three defenders this summer in Poland international Kamil Glik, left-back Benjamin Mendy from Marseille, and Lille's Djibril Sidibe.

Carvalho made 95 Ligue 1 appearances for AS Monaco, scoring two goals.
