Milton Keynes Dons midfielder Gary Smith faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up an ankle ligament injury in Saturday's goalless draw with Brentford.
The 20-year-old had to be substituted in the first half of the stalemate and will be out of action for up to eight weeks.
"It's a massive blow for us," Dons boss Stuart Murdoch told the club's official website.
"Wade Small got a knock in the Brentford game, as did Gareth Edds, so it will be a case of gathering the troops to see how many we have for the trip to Hull on Wednesday.
"If things are as bad as I think they are, then I'll be thinking about loans. I'll have to stay up with a notepad and pen and get thinking before making some telephone calls.
"I think we'll need a wide player to supplement the squad and with Gary being out injured there is an opening in the middle of midfield."
