Millwall bolster bid for play-off campaign

Ben Thompson's second-half stunner helped Millwall take a giant step towards securing a Sky Bet League One play-off place as they climbed to fourth with a 3-1 win over Shrewsbury.

It seemed an ideal fixture for the Lions, but the visitors to the Den - winless in their last four - took a shock lead after five minutes.

Larnell Cole made an intelligent run in behind and was found by a Sullay Kaikai through ball.

Cole made no mistake when one-on-one with Jordan Archer, calmly stroking the ball past him.

It seemed a long way back for Millwall, until midfielder Thompson produced something special just before the hour mark.

Thompson controlled a Shrewsbury clearance deftly on his chest and volleyed the ball sumptuously into the top corner from 25 yards.

The hosts were ahead just four minutes later, Steven Morison meeting a Chris Taylor corner to nod home.

Millwall secured the points in the 90th minute. Lee Gregory latched on to a poor backpass and was chopped down by goalkeeper Mark Halstead.

Halstead was sent off and Gregory dispatched the penalty to extend Millwall's unbeaten home run to six games.
