Lions lose Ward for three weeks
The 31-year-old centre-back missed Saturday's 5-0 League One home win over Tranmere.
Lions assistant boss Joe Gallen said: "We are disappointed to lose Darren - but at one stage we thought he could miss the rest of the season, so in that respect we are pleased."
Ward is due to stay on loan at the New Den until December 13.
Midfielder Ali Fuseini has also picked up a knee problem, but he is expected to return within two weeks.
