Lawrence free to leave Lions

Millwall defender Matt Lawrence has been told that he is free to leave the club after losing his first team place to Kevin Muscat.

The 29-year-old has made 120 league appearances for the Lions since his £200,000 move from Wycombe Wanderers in March 2000, but manager Mark McGhee has warned him that he is far from certain to be offered a new deal at the end of the season.

"If he gets an offer from another club it would not be right for me to make him sit on the bench until the end of the season. He would be allowed to go," McGhee told the Evening Standard.

Lawrence himself was disappointed to hear the news but accepts that his future now lies away from The Den.

"I wish I could stay but perhaps I am not wanted," he said. "If the right club comes along offering me first-team football I would have to take it."
