Williams commits future to Boro
Published : 11 Feb 2010 11:48:09

RHYS WILLIAMS has set his heart on a 2010 treble after starting by penning a new three-and-a-half year deal with Middlesbrough. Williams, who still had 18 months left to run on his existing terms, now wants to drive Boro back to the Premier League before playing in the World Cup with Australia. The 22-year-old's new contract keeps him at the Riverside Stadium until 2013 and he insists that he never had any doubts about signing the new terms. "It's all happened for me in the past year," said Williams, due back from a pelvic injury at the end of the month. "This time last year I had just signed loan terms with Burnley for an extended loan. I ended up suffering relegation with Boro and celebrating promotion with Burnley in the same weekend. "Relegation was a blessing in disguise for me because it gave me a chance to break into the first team. It wasn't a difficult decision to sign a new contract because I have been in the team and happy. "Gordon Strachan came in and quickly said that he wanted me to sign a new deal. That's a big boost for me, especially as he picked me so often. "Now my aim is to win promotion. If I can help Boro win promotion and play at the World Cup that would be the perfect scenario."
