Middlesbrough defender David Wheater has ended speculation surrounding his future after putting pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half year contract.
The 21-year-old centre-half had been mentioned as a possible transfer target for Newcastle United and Manchester City following his impressive form at the heart of the Boro defence this season.
However, the England Under-21s international has now agreed a new deal that ties him to the Riverside Stadium until the summer of 2011.
Wheater has made 30 appearances and scored four times for Boro this season.
Speaking earlier in the month, Wheater revealed he was keen to pledge his future to the Teessiders.
He said: "I don't want to play for anyone else apart from Middlesbrough.
"Obviously, there might come a time further down the line where I might want to play for Manchester United, Arsenal or whoever, but this is my hometown club and I can't think of anywhere else I would rather be.
"The manager has shown faith in me and I love playing here."
