Tottenham to end three-year hunt for Downing with £12m summer swoop for Boro star

Tottenham will finally end their three-year hunt to land Stewart Downing this summer. The Middlesbrough winger has been a top target for Spurs ever since the 2006 World Cup. Boro have so far resisted all opportunities to cash in the England international despite the star's bid to leave. But they will finally cave in and offload Downing, 24, at the end of the season. He is expected to cost in the region of £12million. The deal will end Spurs' quest to bring in a top-quality left winger. Boss Harry Redknapp has been forced to move the likes of David Bentley and Luka Modric into that position but he has remained determined to swoop for Downing. He almost joined Tottenham in January last year but was eventually persuaded to sign a new five-year contract. Yet, that deal failed to convince the winger to stay at the Riverside and he handed in a transfer request in the last transfer window. A move to White Hart Lane now seems certain, although Liverpool may also battle to land Downing, who is tasked with hauling Boro out of their relegation scrap. Downing, who featured for England at the 2006 World Cup, won his 23rd cap in the 4-0 win over Slovakia at Wembley on Saturday.
