This footballing A-Z is a thing of beauty

Illustrator Steve Welsh has come up with his A-Z of football – and the game has never looked so beautiful.

Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a different player – not the best, says Middlesbrough fan Welsh, just the ones that particularly appeal to him.

That explains why you have Paul McGrath rather than Lionel Messi, Pippo Inzaghi rather than Pele and Carlos Valderrama ahead of Marco van Basten.

And it was no easy task for Welsh to choose – it seems Pele hardly got a look-in for P. Or Michel Platini. Or Ferenc Puskas for that matter…

The letter B posed a particular problem.

B is for Brolin if you ask us. Ultimately though, we think he made some amazing choices.
