Strachan on the verge of Middlesbrough appointment

Middlesbrough are poised to confirm Gordon Strachan as their new manager, following the sacking of Gareth Southgate.

Sources close to the club expect Strachan to be announced at The Riverside on Friday, although the 52-year-old former Celtic manager will not be in charge for Saturday's match against Preston North End.

"We are well on with it. I have been very busy with it," said Boro chairman Steve Gibson.

"I don't expect us to have somebody in place before the Preston game, but I do expect us to be able to make an announcement before the Preston game.

"Nothing is certain in football, but I am hopeful we will have an announcement for the fans before the weekend."
