    Southgate vows to attack

    14 Apr 2009 - 12:57:46

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has promised that he will continue to tell his side to attack as they attempt to lift themselves out of the relegation zone.

The weekend win against Hull City lifted spirits on Teesside and gave Southgate renewed optimism that Boro could extricate themselves from danger.

He told the Evening Gazette: "We knew that we had to gamble against Hull and it paid off for us. Fulham will give us a different kind of test, but we still have to push forward and we have to create chances.

"I thought the interaction between Afonso Alves and Marlon King made a big difference for us at the weekend.

"Afonso didn't score, but had a big hand in the first goal and he worked very hard. It was one of his best performances. He knows what we expect of him and he gave us what we were looking for.

"We knew that Marlon wouldn't need any motivation for that one. There was a lot of devilment about his play. I think both players would have thoroughly enjoyed the game and the win has done wonders for everybody's confidence.

"I know that it's a long time since we scored three goals. In fact it was the time we scored eight against Manchester City. You can't throw caution to the wind but we have to continue to push forward.

"We know there are goals in this team. We haven't scored enough of them this season but maybe the corner has finally been turned. We need more goals in the remaining six games if we're to stay in this league."
