Manager Gareth Southgate has revealed that Middlesbrough are being hampered by a club debt of £85million.
The Boro boss was criticised for not bringing any players into the Riverside Stadium on permanent deals during the transfer window.
The Teessiders are currently languishing in the relegation zone and the only player to arrive during January was striker Marlon King on loan.
But Southgate, whose position is reportedly under threat, has now revealed the reason for the club's reluctance to spend.
"I have a very good relationship with the chairman. Everything about the club is discussed," he told The Sun.
"We have a debt of £85million. We know the resources we have and we know the parameters and that makes life difficult.
"We are in a different position now to the last eight or nine years.
"The chairman knows what he will get from me and that is every hour towards keeping this football club in the Premier League."
