Southgate rues poor defending

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate was upset by his team's defending after their 4-0 defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday. Goals from Robbie Keane, Roman Pavlyuchenko and a brace by potential England call-up Aaron Lennon did the damage as Boro's rear-guard was cut open at White Heart Lane. Southgate was hoping his side had turned a corner following their impressive win over Liverpool at the weekend. Tuncay was a goalscorer on Saturday, and the Turkish striker twice had the ball in the back of the net in London, only to see his efforts chalked off for off-side. The Boro was happy enough with his side's attacking play, but singled out sloppy defending as the key reason for their midweek failings. "I thought we were poor defensively," Southgate said. "We looked a threat going forward. It was open - which was exactly what we didn't want, because they have better footballers than us. "We came here in good spirits. Were we too buoyant? We certainly had belief. It was a big blow - but it's about how we respond now. "I don't think there was complacency, but we didn't do the right things at the right times and we weren't as resilient as we should have been. "We have to apologise to our fans here. A lot of people would have made the journey - but for us to send them away without even a goal to celebrate, we owe them a performance."
