Southgate needs promotion

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate admits he will lose his job if he does not get the club promoted at the first attempt. A sizeable amount of Boro fans called for Southgate to be replaced at the end of last season following relegation from the Premier League. But chairman Steve Gibson opted to stick by Southgate and he knows that the pressure is on him. "If we don't get promoted then I would imagine that decision will be taken out of my hands," he admitted. "The reality is that the chairman has given me that responsibility and no matter how unpopular I might be, there are many managers out there who are unpopular with their supporters." Southgate has thus far been limited to the amount of transfer activity he has been able to do this summer. He has brought in Mark Yeates and Danny Coyne, whilst Stewart Downing has been sold, but he is looking to bring in at least another couple of new names. "We need to add to the squad and myself and the chairman are working hard on that. "A target man is one thing we have earmarked, we need a physical presence up-front and we have a couple of players in mind that we would like to do a deal for. "We need to add a midfield player, we need goals from all parts of the pitch. I think that is crucial." Southgate has also found himself on the end of some major criticism for selling Lee Cattermole last year - who has since shone in Wigan colours. "Hindsight is a wonderful thing," he admitted. "I think of the players we allowed to leave - Lee Cattermole had an excellent season with Wigan. "But we felt he had to leave the North East to help him progress - sometimes players can come through at clubs they start but sometimes they need a change of environment."
