Southgate has his squad up for assault

MIDDLESBROUGHS capture of Caleb Folan and Sean St Ledger has put the finishing touches to what Gareth Southgate hopes will be a promotion-winning squad.[LNB] Barring long-term injuries to key personnel, the manager does not expect to bring any more new faces to the club for the foreseeable future.[LNB] If we are going to achieve promotion then we are going to have to do it with these players, confirmed Southgate who yesterday secured Republic of Ireland international striker Folan on a three month loan from Hull City following St Ledgers arrival earlier this week.[LNB] The pair regard their moves as offering the twin prize of a long term deal with Middlesbrough while boosting their international aspirations.[LNB] Southgate believes their arrival gives Boros squad sufficient robustness to sustain their impressive early-season form.[LNB] Folan adds the type of muscular presence the forward line has lacked since the departure of Yakubu to Everton two years ago while St Ledgers cultured defending has drawn comparison with his new gaffer.[LNB] Both will be included in the squad for tomorrow afternoons top-of-the-Championship encounter at home to West Brom.[LNB] Southgate noted: Losing Tuncay and Afonso (Alves) meant we wanted another senior striker and Caleb gives us that. Defenders wont like playing against him.[LNB] Folan comes into a Boro side averaging two goals per game and with even the usually goal-shy Jeremie Alaidiere rediscovering his touch in the penalty area, the 26- year-old faces a battle to secure a regular starting berth.[LNB] Southgate admitted: Its going to be difficult with Leroy (Lita), Jeremie and Marvin (Emnes) all in form.[LNB] But we will pick up injuries.[LNB] Caleb is a big lad and brings another threat to the one we already have.[LNB] He is very hungry, works hard and has the desire to prove a point. He can play as a targetman but hes also capable of finishing.[LNB] However, Folans record of netting only nine times in just under 50 games for the Tigers suggests the former Leeds United Academy striker cant be relied on to spearhead Boros scoring threat.[LNB] Instead, his prowess as a bustling presence to create space for more natural finishers offers Southgate a useful option. He recently drew praise from Ireland boss Geovanni Trapatonni who was impressed by Folans link-up with Robbie Keane.[LNB] Hes a raw talent and has room to improve. I know the Irish manager was very pleased with him. Playing international football has added stature to Caleb and Sean,[LNB] added Southgate.[LNB] Folan confirmed that he had no hesitation in dropping down a division to secure regular first team football.[LNB] This is a massive club and it doesnt feel like a step down, he said. Middlesbrough have superb facilities, great support and are a top flight club in all but name. I hope to help put that right and get them back where they deserve.[LNB] Boro are advising fans to arrive early tomorrow and for Season Card holders to ensure to check theyve got the correct card.[LNB] Seats can be booked, but club staff are expecting a big walk up on the day.[LNB] At recent games, a number of Season Card holders have had their entry delayed as they have arrived at the turnstiles with cards from previous seasons.[LNB]
