Southgate doing it for Gibson

Gareth Southgate is determined for Middlesbrough to stay up for the sake of chairman Steve Gibson. The Boro supremo has stood by Southgate, despite calls from some sections of the club's fans for the manager to be sacked. A horrendous run of form over the past six months has seen Boro drop to second from bottom in the table and if they fail to take something from two of their final three games they will be relegated. Southgate has always remained optimistic about Boro's plight and he says he wants to do it all for Gibson. "Anybody who wants to achieve puts pressure on themselves," he said. "It is great to have the support of the chairman, of course, but I want to achieve for the football club and also to repay that faith. "Everybody on the staff, in particular, feels that debt towards the people at the top. "We want it to work for them and for the rest of the fans - because Keith [Lamb, chief executive] and the chairman are fans and we want to pull through it for all the supporters." New dealMeanwhile, Boro have handed a new contract to third choice goalkeeper Jason Steele. The 18-year-old England youth international, another product of the club's famed academy, has penned a new three-year deal at the Riverside.
