Shawky shunned Blades

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has revealed that Mohamed Shawky turned down a transfer window move to Sheffield United. The 27-year-old Egypt international has made little secret of his unhappiness at Boro. But Southgate has revealed that Shawky shunned a chance to move to Bramall Lane over the summer. "Mohamed had the opportunity to go to Sheffield, but turned it down," he said. The midfielder is currently deemed not fit enough to be involved with the first-team squad, but Southgate insists he will be considered if he gets himself fit. "Mohamed has not been fit enough to train with the first team squad," Southgate continued. "He's working with the medical team in order to recover. "He's had a lot of commitments with Egypt over the past few weeks. "He needs to get fit again and back in full training and then he will be considered." Shawky has played just five games for Boro this year, with his last start coming in May.
