Shawky celebrates

Middlesbrough's Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Shawky is celebrating one of the most famous wins in his country's history. The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Thursday night's 1-0 Confederations Cup victory over world champions Italy in Johannesburg which left the Africans level on points with the Azzurri in Group B. A win over the United States in the final round of matches could see Egypt edge the Italians, who face Brazil on Sunday, out of the semi-finals. The success, which followed a last-gasp 4-3 defeat by the Brazilians, will have come as a boost to Shawky at the end of a difficult season on Teesside. He managed only 16 appearances as Boro slipped out of the Barclays Premier League, and has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the Riverside Stadium.
