Scunthorpe v Boro preview

18 August 2009 11:22
Scunthorpe's new signing Jordan Spence goes straight into the squad to face promotion favourites Middlesbrough, who have a decision to make on Tuncay Sanli. West Ham defender Spence has joined the Iron on a one-month loan deal but is likely to have to settle for a place on the bench. That means captain Cliff Byrne will continue to partner Rob Jones at the heart of the defence in the continued absence of David Mirfin, who is struggling with an ankle problem. Other than Spence's potential inclusion, manager Nigel Adkins is expected to name the same side as the one that beat Derby 3-2 at the weekend, meaning Michael O'Connor will continue to fend off the challenge of Grant McCann for a starting berth in central midfield. Scunthorpe picked up their first points of the season against the Rams and will be looking to add to their haul when they take on Boro for the first time since 1967. Boro team newsMiddlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate will make a late call on whether to include striker Tuncay. The Turkey star, who is expected to leave the club before the closure of the transfer window, scored in Saturday's 3-0 win at Swansea after coming on as a substitute following his return from international duty in midweek. Southgate has no fresh injury problems, with midfielder Gary O'Neil having put groin surgery on hold until the end of the month. Striker Jeremie Aliadiere (hamstring) is expected to return to training later this week, while Didier Digard (groin), Emanuel Pogatetz (knee), Brad Jones and Chris Riggott (both ankle) and Matthew Bates (cruciate ligament) remain on the sidelines.
