Former Middlesbrough boss Bruce Rioch is backing latest successor Tony Mowbray to drag the club out of the doldrums. Rioch made Mowbray his captain as he guided the Teessiders away from the brink of extinction in 1986, and is confident he is the man to take them forward once again. He told BBC Tees: "I was absolutely delighted to hear the news. Once I heard of the departure of Gordon Strachan and knowing Mogga was available, I thought this was the ideal job for him. "Going back sometimes is not a good thing, but having had a break of 20 years, he's coming back in a fresh position and I think it will be great for him. "He loves the club and this is an ideal opportunity for him to get back into the game and come back to a football club where he knows the chairman and chief executive. They will support him and he has a great rapport with the fans. "We know it's going to be tough, but he's going to look forward to the challenge, just like he always did."
