Full-back Franck Queudrue admits there is plenty of room for improvement at Middlesbrough but warned critics not to write the Teessiders' season off just yet.
The Frenchman has become frustrated with the downbeat reports suggesting the club will struggle this term following their inconsistent start to the Premiership season.
Steve McClaren's side are currently in 13th position and well off the pace for a European place.
However, Queudrue insists there is still plenty to look forward to with regards to domestic cup competitions and the UEFA Cup, while he feels a good run of games, where the team can apply themselves as they did in the recent 4-1 win against Manchester United, will see them start climbing the table.
He told the Evening Gazette: "The FA Cup has yet to start but we're doing well in the Carling Cup and in Europe and there's still plenty of time to climb the table in the Premiership.
"It's strange how we win one game then struggle to win the next.
"Maybe it's because all the teams we face make it so difficult. There are those we face who are fighting for survival and that's hard.
"They show more fight than us and maybe we have to match that fight, like we did at Everton, even though we didn't get the result."
