Franck Queudrue is facing at least six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury during Middlesbrough's 0-0 draw against Manchester City on New Year's Eve.
The Boro full-back is scheduled to see a specialist next week to ascertain the extent of the damage, but is already resigned to being out of action until February.
"I have a problem with the lateral ligament in my knee, an injury I picked up very late on against Manchester City," Queudrue told Sky Sports.
"I am due to see a specialist on Monday when it will be decided whether I need to have an operation or not, but no matter what, it will be no more than the six to eight weeks."
Meanwhile, Boro's hopes of signing Celtic wing-back Didier Agathe appear to be over after the 30-year-old rejected the chance to link-up with Steve McClaren's squad for a trial.
