Pogatetz adds to Boro's woes
01 Aug 2007 - 14:46:09
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate fears that Emanuel Pogatetz may require surgery after picking up a knee injury during pre-season.
The Austria international sustained the problem during last month's training camp in his homeland and his absence means Boro now have five defenders sidelined.
Southgate told the Evening Gazette: "We sent Manny for scans and yesterday he went to see a specialist.
"It doesn't look good. Surgery is something we might have to consider. Obviously we have to make a quick decision."
Jonathan Woodgate and Robert Huth are currently recovering from summer surgery while Matthew Bates is facing a second cruciate operation after collapsing on the pitch at Darlington.
Chris Riggott missed Saturday's friendly against Hibs with a badly bruised foot.
Southgate remains upbeat though, adding: "I've learned not to worry about injuries. They're part and parcel of the game.
"Whenever players are injured, it gives an opportunity to other members of the squad. That's what the squad is there for.
"Nothing has changed in that we have a squad which is building up nicely, looking forward to the start of the season and the challenge of trying to take the club forward."
