Pain will help us through - Southgate
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate insists the pain of relegation will drive him on to bring success to the club.
The former England defender was acutely aware of what was at stake both on and off the field as last season drew to a climax, and is determined to put things right as soon as possible.
He told the club's official website: "What happened last season definitely had an impact on me.
"When people lose their jobs, that hardens you up very quickly and there are harsh realities of life that everyone at our football club is experiencing now, so there is no way that going through an experience like this will not change your outlook on things.
"These last few months have been an incredibly difficult period, but every new season brings optimism and this is a division we believe we can be extremely competitive in.
"We have to believe we can get back out of this division, and that is our sole aim."
