Nottingham Forest have held talks with Cardiff winger Peter Whittingham over a £1.8million deal.

Middlesbrough have also shown interest in the 25-year-old but Forest look to have the upper hand.

Boro have signed Matthew Kilgallon on a season-long loan from Sunderland after Lee Naylor opted to join Cardiff. Kilgallon is still short of fitness after a back injury.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United have agreed a deal to sign French right-back Jean Calve on a season-long loan from Nancy.

The Ligue 1 side will continue to pay part of his wages.

The 26-year-old had trials at Bramall Lane and Blackpool earlier this summer and new manager Gary Speed has moved to make Calve his first signing.
