No Boro switch for Harewood

Middlesbrough have dismissed reports that they are keen to sign Aston Villa striker Marlon Harewood this summer.

It had been suggested that Gareth Southgate was looking to bring the 29-year-old former West Ham United star to Teesside but the Evening Gazette reports that prospect is highly unlikely.

Meanwhile, Southgate has outlined the type of player he is hoping to tempt to the Riverside Stadium before the Championship season starts in eight weeks' time.

He told Boro's official website: "If they have experience of the league we're going into then that would obviously help but it doesn't mean we're ruling out Premier League players.

"The key element is that we bring in the right type of character.

"Of course we want good players but they have to have a hunger for the challenge of helping us mount a promotion bid.

"We do need more leadership in the dressing room and on the pitch. We also need to get the balance right between experience and energy."
