Mowbray surprise at Wheater stay

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray has admitted his surprise that David Wheater is still at the club after being given permission to speak to Bolton last weekend. The 23-year-old defender looked to be heading out of the Riverside Stadium, but is in the squad for Saturday's npower Championship trip to Bristol City. Mowbray said: "I'm slightly surprised after the events leading up to last weekend. On Thursday and Friday of last week, I thought it looked imminent that David might have left the football club. "But as in all transfers, there are generally at least three or four different parties who all need to agree on the scenario and in this particular scenario, one party particularly wasn't too enamoured and it didn't work, so we are back to the drawing board, really. "As the coach, I just get on and make sure the players are in the right frame of mind. I will utilise him - he is a contracted player to our club - whenever we can."
