Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan is expected to be without on-loan defender Matt Kilgallon again when Burnley visit the Riverside Stadium. Kilgallon, who missed the start of the season because of a back problem, has returned to Sunderland for treatment after aggravating the problem in training on Friday.

Tarmo Kink (knee) started the 3-0 defeat at QPR on Saturday but only lasted 55 minutes while Leroy Lita replaced Kris Boyd 10 minutes later and could be pushing for a start. Mickael Tavares made his debut after signing on transfer deadline day and should feature at home for the first time, with Strachan possibly making changes to kick-start his side`s season.

Boro languish in 20th place in the Championship after winning just once in five games.

Burnley boss Brian Laws will assess the fitness of striker Chris Iwelumo ahead of the trip. The summer signing from Wolves scored a hat-trick in Saturday`s thrilling 4-3 win over Preston following a hamstring injury which ruled him out of international duty with Scotland last week.

However, Iwelumo has not yet fully recovered and said: "I tried a light session on Thursday and I was aware of it all the time.

"Friday it was a bit more free but even when I woke up on the morning of the game I was aware of it."

Should Iwelumo be ruled out, Jay Rodriguez could earn a starting role after he came off the bench to score the winner on Saturday.

Defender Tyrone Mears is available after suspension but midfielder Chris McCann remains a long-term absentee with a knee injury.
