Middlesbrough training ground noshow

The pair were left facing the possibility of disciplinary measures after failing to report for the start of pre-season training at Boro's Rockliffe Park training headquarters in County Durham on Monday. "The players returned to training on Monday," a club spokesman said. "A number of them were missing, some with permission and others without. The matter will be dealt with internally." The £12.7 million club-record signing Alves - who scored just four league goals as Boro were relegated for the first time in 11 seasons - finally showed up this morning but Mido, a £5m signing from Tottenham two years who was loaned out to Wigan last season, has remained away. It remains unclear why Alves, who suffered a broken foot towards the end of last season, reported late for training but the picture should become clearer this week when manager Gareth Southgate unveils new signings Mark Yeates and Danny Coyne this week. Turkish striker Tuncay Sanli also had failed to return without notice but Southgate had authorised his absence due to his international commitments over the summer and England Under-21 players Andrew Taylor and Adam Johnson were also rested after their European Championship duties. Mido is unlikely to be part of manager Gareth Southgate's long-term plans after a mixed spell at the Riverside Stadium since his £6m arrival from Tottenham in August 2007. Alves still has three years remaining on his contract and it would take a sizeable bid before the Teessiders could even consider doing business, something which is perhaps unlikely with his form to date disappointing. Now Southgate, who is being linked with a move for Hull midfielder Bryan Hughes, is focusing on making sure Boro bounce back from the Championship at the first attempt. "It's good to see the players back again and get started on what is an important pre-season for the club as a whole," Southgate said. "The players have kept themselves pretty fit. They've all had their own fitness schedules to keep to over the summer. "The next few weeks will be about working on improving these fitness levels while minimising the risk of injuries, and forging a good team spirit."
