Former Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta is hopeful of being able to forge a future at Middlesbrough, despite having not featured for nearly a year at the Riverside.
The 33-year-old has been out of the first-team picture at Boro since last December, but is keen to get back into the first-team picture as soon as possible.
He told Sky Sports: "My mission is to work each day and fight for a place in the team. The coach makes the decision and I accept it like a professional.
"I insist that I have no problems with the coach. I respect his decisions and that is fine with me.
"I believe that I am still able to play for Boro. It is my challenge to play in a match in the Premier League. In the summer my situation was worse.
"In the last weeks I have not spoken to the directors about my future.
"I saw some rumours in the press about the winter transfer market, but I have signed a deal with Boro and my dream is to play and help the team."
Mendieta has only played 83 times for Boro during more than four years at the club, scoring just six goals.
