McMahon backing Boro for the title

TONY McMAHON is convinced that Middlesbrough can still win the Championship this season even if the three most recent departures are not replaced. Manager Gareth Southgate is still working on loan deals in the hope of bringing in two new faces before Saturdays visit of Ipswich Town. That is looking increasingly unlikely, but Sheffield Uniteds Matthew Kilgallon, Prestons Sean St Ledger, Derbys Rob Hulse and Sunderlands Daryl Murphy are all under consideration. McMahon accepts that in an ideal world new recruits would boost the clubs chances of a quick return to the Premier League. The fullback, however, insists they already have a squad capable of achieving that target. We have had a few days off and we are all recharged, said McMahon. We are all still positive, with one aim and that is to win the league. If we get some additions on loan then that would help but we still believe we can win it with this squad. We have lost Robert Huth, the captain at the start of the season and he had a big part in the clean sheets and the record we got. But we cant affect what has gone on off the field. We have to get back to keeping clean sheets and staying solid. We still have options back there. We have Emanuel Pogatetz and Chris Riggott to come back. There could be someone coming in on loan but whatever, we just have to keep focused on what we are doing. McMahon would have liked the visit of Ipswich to have come around sooner after the back-to-back defeats at Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup and at Bristol City. Middlesbrough ended their pursuit of one target last night with Danny Webber completed a move to Portsmouth. The 27-year-old striker was released by Sheffield United at the end of last season and was a free agent allowing the Premier League side to sign him.
