Johnson scoops award
Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson has been named the North-East Football Writers Association's Young Player of the Year for 2009. The 22-year-old midfielder will collect his award at the FWA's annual dinner in Durham later this month. Sunderland-born Johnson made 33 senior appearances for the club last season as they slipped out of the Barclays Premier League, and he has excelled so far during the current campaign, which has brought him nine goals to date. The senior award was won by then Sunderland defender Danny Collins ahead of former Newcastle counterpart Sebastien Bassong and Collins' now Stoke team-mate Tuncay Sanli, who played alongside Johnson at Boro last season.
