Injury-time woe for Boro

26 September 2009 18:41
Coventry 2 Middlesbrough 2 GARETH SOUTHGATE decided his players should be saved from any flak after last week’s 5-0 humiliation at home to West Brom. No slanging matches with players just some ruthless behind-the-scenes decisions that saw his goalkeeper and both full-backs jettisoned along with one midfielder. It looked a masterstroke of tinkering until Leon Best popped up in the 95th minute to claim a draw for Chris Coleman’s side. Southgate must have been as angry in the Ricoh Arena dressing room as he was at the Riverside last weekend - his side throwing away a two-goal lead they held until the 78th minute. There appeared to be little chance of a comeback after Sean St Ledger – his first goal for Boro in only his second appearance – and Rhys Williams had given Southgate’s side a two goal half-time lead. But after Clinton Morrison turned and shot to bring Coventry back into it with 12 minutes remaining Boro were on the back-foot. They may have had some complaints with Best’s equaliser coming in the fifth minute of injury time but they failed to clear their lines and paid the price.
