HATCHET MAN: FA hit new low after Middlesbrough's paltry fine

The Football Association have never looked more impotent than when they have been the central focus of the refereeing Respect campaign. From dealing with players to disciplining managers, more often than not they have got it wrong. But in fining Middlesbrough £6,000 for failing to control their players they have hit a new low. The penalty for the way the team's players crowded around referee Mark Halsey after Didier Digard's disgraceful tackle on West Bromwich's Borja Valero is paltry. The players jostled the official and looked like they were trying to intimidate him, yet the fine will not make a mark on a club who pay out many times that amount each week to some pretty average players. To add insult to injury £2,000 of the fine is suspended, so the question you have to ask Middlesbrough about their punishment is: did they even notice?
